A few weeks ago, I came across this idea for making your own alphabet rug out of masking tape and thought it was just perfect for Levi. Our sad little rug isn't nearly big enough for our living room, but it is just big enough for 26 letters and nine numbers taped around the edges! Here's what we do with our rug:
Place objects on letters based on the object's first letter (toys, those animal cards I mentioned earlier, anything)
Run to each letter in Levi's name
Jump on L for Levi (etc)
Hop on each number
Walk the circle and sing the alphabet song
As you can tell, most of those are actually gross motor activities, since that's what I feel Levi lacks (because, of course, that's what Mama least likes to do).

The police car and school bus on their respective letters.

Hop on each number

(I used a Sharpie to draw the appropriate number of dots on each number.)
This is a great idea! We've done the same with shapes and patterns. I've also made a little 'path' with zig zags and curves and had my then-2 year old try to walk along it. I used duct tape and it made a sticky residue. Whoops. Thank you for reminding me to try this again!

Great idea, to do paths! (I need a bigger rug.) :) I've tried a few pattern activities, and Levi just doesn't seem to get it yet (which of course is just fine, since he's not yet two!).
ReplyDeleteMy husband is worried we'll have residue when I take up the masking tape, but since the rug was only $10 anyway, I figured I'll just leave it until it starts to peel off and then deal with the effects later. So far, it's sticking pretty well!
