I tackled several little projects for Isaac this year. Partly that's because a holiday gives me an excuse to try out some things that are too involved for every-day, but also because I really feel like I haven't been doing enough to honor all of the work he puts in to and for our family. I'm so grateful!
First, I made a little trio of snacks:
Apple rings (dehydrated in the dehydrator I bought him for Christmas, given with the promise of making dried apples . . . which I haven't done since Christmas), which look super cute in their big Ball jar. :)
Whole wheat crackers, which didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but have promise. I ordered some more coconut oil last week, and waited and waited and waited for it to come, but in the end I ran out of time and had to use olive oil instead. It's pretty intense in the flavor. They're good with cheese, or maybe dipped in hummus or something??, but in the future, I'll choose a different oil. I also didn't roll them out thin enough, so some of them didn't get crispy.
Crispy cheese crackers, which are quite yummy, and perfect for the man who loves Cheez-its but hates MSG!
Then, while my parents were here to help, I made two "new" handkerchiefs. The fabric is cut out of an old duvet cover I deemed no longer necessary (as I own two duvets and three covers, and this one was the oldest and ugliest). One has two handprints (one each from Levi and Owen), the other has two footprints (ditto). I tried to hand-stitch the edges using these instructions for a rolled hem, but the truth is, I just can't sew at all. I did the best I could, and it looks VERY homemade (which is okay when you're 8 and making something for your dad, but not quite as cute at 30). If they fall apart in the wash, I'll take them to my mother-in-law's and have her use her sewing machine.

(Not-quite-finished project, because I wanted to take pictures before Isaac got home.)
For dinner, I made this recipe for chicken tikka masala. If you've never had chicken tikka masala, get yourself to Ambar Indian on Ludlow in Clifton, quick. If that's not possible, this recipe will definitely suffice. I even had a package of naan I picked up on manager's special at the grocery store.
And dessert? A peppermint ice cream cake that is technically a "Christmas recipe." But every time I ask Isaac what sort of dessert he'd like, he says, "oh, I don't know, maybe pound cake, or ice cream?" And this recipe has both, plus a chocolate coating. It didn't turn out pretty, but it was delicious!
