This week we focused on a collection of easy readers. I went to the library intending to pick up Tales of Oliver Pig, and there I discovered that there are actually several volumes of stories about the Pig family!
I personally did not love this set. Oliver is not very nice to his little sister, Amanda, and -- well, let's just say the consequences of such treatment would be a little swifter and a bit more severe than Oliver experiences. :) But, it was good practice in talking through the sort of "our family does things differently than their family" issues that will likely surface, with increasing seriousness, as the children get older. Except for maybe two or three isolated stories (each book contains 4-5 stories), the rest of the series was mildly amusing.
Levi, however, loved these books. Though he enjoys reading, it's rare to find him sitting still with a book, with the notable exception of the Magic School Bus books. Several times this week I caught him with one of the Pig books, chuckling to himself over the stories. His favorite was Oliver, Amanda, and Grandmother Pig.
The first book, Tales of Oliver Pig, features food in almost every story. We took our cues from Mother Pig and spent the afternoon making oatmeal raisin cookies (recipe from the old Better Homes and Gardens cookbook), then had spaghetti, meatballs, peas, bread and butter for dinner!
My recipe-reader. It's especially convenient when I'm using a recipe on the computer in the den: he runs back and forth from the kitchen for me.
Using the cookie scoop: not quite strong enough, but almost!
We'd already done our science and drawing last week, but looked up pigs on the National Geographic Kids site and learned three new facts. At the end of the week, Isaac took Levi and Owen to Parky's Farm to see the pig, but said animal was grunting loudly and scared my sound-sensitive boys, so no photo opportunity there. :)
I love looking at your beautiful blog and all the great pictures! You will have an amazing record of your days with your boys. They are very blessed to have you as their mom.

Oh, Becky, I'm such an awful photographer! And I simply do not have the inclination to learn how to do it better. But thank you, thank you, for encouraging words, always. It is fun to keep this little journal of the little years!
