What I'm Cooking
Slow cooker chili (pulled from the freezer) and cornbread waffles.
Aidell's Pineapple-Bacon Chicken Sausages, homemade buns, and roasted broccoli. The sausages went on close-out a few weeks ago when my Kroger stopped carrying them, and I bought all of the packages they had.
Meatloaf (my mom's standard recipe, nothing fancy) and mashed potatoes. While I had my hands covered in ketchup and bread crumbs, I went ahead and made a second meatloaf to stick in the freezer.
Blueberry Orange Bran Muffins. We grind our own flour from white wheat berries, so when I want to make a cake or baked good that isn't quite so dense -- for example, my dad's birthday cake -- I sift the flour. Accordingly, I often have fresh bran on hand. What else to do with bran besides make bran muffins? It makes me feel like an old lady to say it, but these muffins are actually really good. The fresh orange juice and zest brightens them up beautifully. I used plain whole milk yogurt in place of the sour cream. I'll definitely be making these again, but out of curiosity, anybody have any interesting bran recipes?
What I'm Reading
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (book 4). Funny story: two weeks ago, Isaac bought a used Kindle Touch off of craigslist. The guy from whom he purchased it was quite excited to tell him about the website where he regularly goes to download books for free . . . illegally. So as Isaac is clearing out all of the illegally-obtained books, and I'm still waiting for the next Potter book to be available at the library, he discovers all seven of the series right there on his new Kindle. For a few brief seconds, it was so tempting: nobody knows we have them, and we didn't download them illegally, and I read so fast they'd be gone in a few days . . . and then we were laughing at ourselves and hitting "delete." It always amuses me when I'm tempted by things so out of character.

blowing out the candles
licking off the frosting (okay, yes, Owen is biting the candle in half)
not pulling off the party hat!
Favorite pin: Homemade Chick-fil-A sandwich (or here). A lot of you know that we generally avoid Chick-fil-A because the ingredient list for the chicken sandwich is unbelievably awful. This make-at-home recipe takes a lot of work, but it might be worth it on a special occasion!
Favorite blog post: It's a tie this week. It may be because of my current obsession with the orange bran muffins, but these orange-buttermilk donut muffins sound tasty. (I've also been very eager to try out this whole alleged "donut-muffin" phenomenon I keep seeing on Pinterest.) Or, if you'd rather something a little more thoughtful, a few thoughts on marriage equality -- but not the kind you're thinking -- from Kristen at Five in Tow.
Wow, the picture of Dad and Levi blowing out the candles has great color! Very nice!
