Date Night 2013: August (Family Date)/Stay-cation 2013: Day 8

Or, longest blog post title ever. Well, it's both!

Days 1-2, days 3-4, days 5-7.

For our August family date, contained within our stay-cation, I went totally crazy: I decided we'd take our toddlers mini-golfing. I figured it had the potential to be either really funny, or really awful, and we'd never know until we tried.

It was a little bit of both. :)

We started with breakfast at IHOP (gift card included in the date envelope), then continued west to Green Acres Canoe on the border of Indiana (again, gift certificate included in the date envelope). I surmised from the picture on the website that they were prepared to handle very young children, and I was right. At 10:00 on a Monday morning, the place was practically deserted (except for a few very random beer-drinking men dressed like pirates waiting to go canoeing). There are ten holes of mini golf, all on a flat surface, all with a farm theme -- and live rabbits and chickens (in cages) to complement the theme!

It probably comes as no surprise that Levi took mini golf very seriously. After his second swing, he demanded to do it himself, and spent the next half-hour following his ball around the greens, pushing vigorously with his putter. (Yes, pushing.)

It probably also comes as no surprise that Owen had no ability, no interest, and NO desire to be helped whatsoever. Very shortly after this picture, he started carrying his ball around and dropping it into the hole whenever it suited him, stopping frequently to kick the other balls (mostly mine). Even more shortly after that, he gave up entirely and wandered around the course aimlessly, until he discovered the tractor (below).

Though Silas has more of a temper than his older brothers, he is surprisingly willing to sit in the stroller and watch the action. He also really, really loves to touch his head.

Very intent, this one.

The play tractor is located around the eighth of the ten holes; as such, only Isaac and Levi actually finished the course.

Owen developed a pretty serious fear of heights this summer and would only climb up with someone's help, but he relaxed eventually.

Boys on a tractor.

The lady working came out to get our picture, which you can find on the Green Acres Canoe facebook site. Once again, rare proof that I was actually along for the fun. :) The people working there were fantastic, both months ago when I was inquiring about gift certificates, and during our visit. Kids 4 and under are free, so it was a whopping $4 for all of us to play ten holes (or, you know, as many each person managed to finish), plus play on the tractor. Two thumbs up!

We scurried home for lunch and naps. By 4pm, Isaac had loaded up the big boys and headed down to the Newport Aquarium. During August, two kids get in free with each paying adult from 4-7pm, so if you're local, hurry (those tickets only available online)! We declined to make it a family affair . . . I mean, I declined to make it a family affair, because I really, really hate looking at fish. Yuck. But they had a great time "just the boys," and I got a ton of stuff done at home with just Silas for (rather demanding) company.

I have no idea what face Owen is making.

A very small part of the shark tank. Seriously, I hate this stuff.

Dinner at the Hofbrauhaus in Newport, KY. Special time with Daddy!

Naaman

This week's Bible story was that of Naaman the leper, from 2 Kings 5 . Short version: the prophet Elisha tells Naaman to wash in the Jordan River seven times, and after a bit of moaning and groaning, he does and is healed. I modified this craft , which I found through our preschool curriculum .  We didn't have any blue plastic cups, so first we painted styrofoam cups. Owen had no interest in painting, and as he was playing happily by himself, I saw no reason to make him participate. Painting the outside of cups is actually really easy. Just stick your non-dominant hand inside the cup! I googled "man outline" and searched until I found a workable face, then printed it twice. Levi had the rare treat of using a marker to put red dots ("leprosy") all over the face.  Painstakingly drawing leprous sores on Naaman's ear.  Then I taped Naaman's face (one clean side, one spotted side) to a popsicle stick (which I just now realized y...

Homeschool Curriculum 2025-2026

Given the ages of my children, I will only have two years when I am actively homeschooling all six kids, and this is the first. I have more spreadsheets going than ever before, four student paper planners, one kid using Google Classroom for assignments again, and a giant schedule on butcher paper so that everyone knows whose turn it is in the living room (for instrument practice) or on the laptop. BRING IT ON. Pretty sure we've only gotten all six kids awake for family devotions once in 8 days of school. Vanilla and Snowflakes

You may remember from my Goin' Crunchy 2011 post that I started a batch of homemade vanilla back in May. It's all ready for use now, just in time for Christmas gifts!  I bought these little bottles  and a pack of winter-themed address labels on clearance at Target, dug through my craft boxes to find some old ribbon, and ended up with this: (You can't see it, but there is coordinating ribbon around the sugar jar, too.) As you can see, after I was done using my vanilla beans for extract, I cut them up into 2-inch pieces and covered them with white sugar in baby food jars: after about a week, the sugar is delightfully vanilla-flavored!  I haven't used it yet, but hear it's great for sprinkling on baked goods or oatmeal, or stirring into coffee or tea.  Packaged together in a little gift bag, they're making a nice small (and frugal!) gift for . . . those people who need nice, small, frugal gifts.  :)   In other news, I picked up a $1 sheet of snowfla...
