Pinterest Fun

Over the past several weeks, I've actually followed through on some of the ideas I've gleaned from Pinterest.  I really love to scrapbook, but finding the time is nearly impossible these days, so it's been fun to do a few quick projects, just to release those creative juices a little bit:

For example, when you need a special dessert, like these cute birds' nests I made for Easter:

This next one, a year-long calendar journal, is still a project in the works.  The original is super cute, in an upcycled fruit basket with vintage postcards as dividers.  I'll upgrade from my recipe-card plastic box when we start visiting the farmers' markets again!  Even in this simple fashion, I've enjoyed jotting down little things from most days, and look forward to being able to see "what we did last year on this date" as I continue it into the future.
(I didn't make this until mid-February, so January is sadly blank!)

Ah yes . . . on March 16, Isaac and I dropped the kids off at my parents' and stayed at a bed and breakfast in nearby historic Wooster.  Nice little weekend getaway (and an absolutely glorious breakfast)!

This weekly calendar has gotten quite a few admiring comments by guests in my home.  It would have been much simpler to actually buy a multi-frame grouping, as the original creator did, but I found cheap blue frames at IKEA and put my husband to work super-gluing them together in my desired fashion.  I put coordinating scrapbook paper in each frame, and use a dry-erase marker to write our week's events.  It hangs near Levi's high chair, and he has really enjoyed looking at the days of the week and asking what happens on each day!

Weird . . . on Friday, you can see the reflection of our dining room light switch.  :)

You find the other projects I've done thanks to Pinterest here, on my "Time to Claim Pinterest Success" board, including (but not limited to):
  • homemade ice cream (Very tasty, but not quite right in consistency . . . almost like eating chocolate frosting.)
  • Snickers Salad (Also very tasty, but best eaten the day of, as it waters down in the fridge overnight.)
  • counter-top organizational system (Just a hanging-file box from Target, but it has reformed my counter delightfully!  I skipped the calendar pictured in the original, as we use Google calendars for everything.)
  • crockpot salsa chicken (Quick, filling, and totally in line with my cravings for Mexican food this pregnancy.)

On a personal note: Pinterest can be totally overwhelming (and/or time-consuming) if you let it be.  I've decided to follow only the boards of people I know.  Unless I'm looking for something extremely specific -- like, for instance, when I wanted to make a variety of Oreo-related desserts for Oreo's 100th birthday -- I don't go searching the entire site.  It works for me. :)  Happy pinning!

Naaman

This week's Bible story was that of Naaman the leper, from 2 Kings 5 . Short version: the prophet Elisha tells Naaman to wash in the Jordan River seven times, and after a bit of moaning and groaning, he does and is healed. I modified this craft , which I found through our preschool curriculum .  We didn't have any blue plastic cups, so first we painted styrofoam cups. Owen had no interest in painting, and as he was playing happily by himself, I saw no reason to make him participate. Painting the outside of cups is actually really easy. Just stick your non-dominant hand inside the cup! I googled "man outline" and searched until I found a workable face, then printed it twice. Levi had the rare treat of using a marker to put red dots ("leprosy") all over the face.  Painstakingly drawing leprous sores on Naaman's ear.  Then I taped Naaman's face (one clean side, one spotted side) to a popsicle stick (which I just now realized y...

Homeschool Curriculum 2025-2026

Given the ages of my children, I will only have two years when I am actively homeschooling all six kids, and this is the first. I have more spreadsheets going than ever before, four student paper planners, one kid using Google Classroom for assignments again, and a giant schedule on butcher paper so that everyone knows whose turn it is in the living room (for instrument practice) or on the laptop. BRING IT ON. Pretty sure we've only gotten all six kids awake for family devotions once in 8 days of school. Vanilla and Snowflakes

You may remember from my Goin' Crunchy 2011 post that I started a batch of homemade vanilla back in May. It's all ready for use now, just in time for Christmas gifts!  I bought these little bottles  and a pack of winter-themed address labels on clearance at Target, dug through my craft boxes to find some old ribbon, and ended up with this: (You can't see it, but there is coordinating ribbon around the sugar jar, too.) As you can see, after I was done using my vanilla beans for extract, I cut them up into 2-inch pieces and covered them with white sugar in baby food jars: after about a week, the sugar is delightfully vanilla-flavored!  I haven't used it yet, but hear it's great for sprinkling on baked goods or oatmeal, or stirring into coffee or tea.  Packaged together in a little gift bag, they're making a nice small (and frugal!) gift for . . . those people who need nice, small, frugal gifts.  :)   In other news, I picked up a $1 sheet of snowfla...
