When my friend Jen comes this weekend, we have some grand plans in the works. See, for the past year or two, we've each been finding our own way towards a more natural lifestyle. You've read about a number of my pursuits already (homemade Clorox wipes, cleaning my shower with baking soda and a toothbrush, honey-and-onion cough syrup, my slow foray into cloth diapering); meanwhile, Jen's been chatting up local farmers at markets, buying chickens and eggs from real farms [you know, as opposed to real Krogers], canning tomatoes, using an all-natural shampoo bar.
There are some things, we decided, that are either too big of a project or too scary of a project to try alone, so we have dedicated the upcoming weekend to conquering some yet-uncharted waters [you know, when we're not entertaining our husbands or keeping track of the three little boys under 2 years old]. Here's what we're hoping to accomplish:
1. homemade vanilla
2. water kefir
3. yogurt (I haven't had good luck with my regular recipe lately, so I'm not sure whose I'll try this time)
4. eating liver (The deal: everybody takes one bite, and then we order a pizza if we must.)
5. green smoothies
6. eating quinoa (a grain neither of us have ever tried)
7. black bean brownies
8. homemade chocolate chips
I might also browse www.crunchybetty.com for some good girly spa-type treatments, if the boys don't mind!
I'm open to any other suggestions. If you had to pick one thing to add, subtract, or change in your life to be less processed, more natural, what would it be?

Caleb and Levi at 7 and 5 months, respectively (Jan. 2010)
Caleb and Levi at 15 and 13 months, respectively (Aug. 2010)
Can't wait to see them at 24 and 22 months, respectively!!!
Black bean brownies are delicious!!! We enjoy Miranda Bailey's recipe.
ReplyDeleteTo add to my life: 1/2 cup of oatmeal in my smoothie recipe of banana, chocolate protein powder and skim milk.
Have fun!
Quinoa is a new favorite in our house. Karl Dollard introduced us to it a few years ago and we thought it was just weird. Now we really like it.
ReplyDeleteJacob made an Indian style dinner recently with a focus on curry: Curried lamb, curried quinoa, and ratatouille. Delicious! Here's the recipe:

Hint: Go to Whole Foods to purchase in bulk. It is about $5 for a small box at Kroger. I think Whole Foods was $3.39/lb. ($5.99/lb for sprouting quinoa)
